Lee County, IA has some competition in its efforts to land a new industry.

The county has spent months trying to encourage Iowa Fertilizer Company to build a plant on several hundred acres of land just north of Fort Madison.

The company is a subsidiary of Orascom Construction Industries, which is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.

The $1.3-billion plant could create up to 200 permanent jobs and several thousand short-term construction jobs.

The six-inch water main that supplies residents in a subdivision north of Colchester and others near Lake Argyle is in need of repair. It lays across the supporting structure under a bridge on North Coal Street. The line is sagging 14 inches at two different joints, one of which is leaking.

The city will pay $7,000 for a short-term fix. Tharp Brothers of Oquawka will shore up the line within the next 10 days.

The city won't know the condition of the line until that work is completed. The location makes inspection difficult. The pipe is also covered in insulation.

Helena Iles Papaioannou, working for the Papers of Abraham Lincoln Project, found the report of the first doctor to treat Lincoln after he was shot at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. in April, 1865.

The paper by Dr. Charles Leale was in records of the Surgeon General in the National Archives in Washington.

The Papers of Abraham Lincoln Project is dedicated to finding and saving all documents written by or about the 16th president during his lifetime.

Director Daniel Stowell said the report is remarkable because it's straightforward and lacks sentimentality.

Ambulance crews in Hancock County are still suffering too many mistakes  despite operating under a “Plan of Corrections” for months to address them.

The Blessing Hospital EMS Director says that must stop.

Dr. Kelly Cox oversees ambulance services in Hancock, Adams, Brown and Pike counties. He has considerable latitude under state law to remedy the situation. He can suspend the licenses of EMTs who are not doing the job well. He could even suspend the county-wide service. He could also suggest the Illinois Department of Public Health issue fines.

The city council voted in favor of a resolution of support for seeking $1.1 million in federal grant funding for the West Adams Street revitalization project.

“This project is the gateway to Western Illinois University,” said Eric Moe of McClure Engineering. “It's often the first impression for newcomers to our community.”

The polls will open at 7:00 A.M. for voters in southeast Iowa as they decide who should move on from the primary to the November General Election.

There are contested races up and down the ballot in Lee and Des Moines Counties.  They start in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District.

Congressman Dave Loebsack faces a challenge from State Senator Joe Seng on the Democratic side while John Archer and Dan Dolan are squaring off for the Republican nod.
