The head of a state panel on police officer training now says facilities in Macomb and Urbana can co-exist. 

It appeared the facility at the University of Illinois was about to close this summer. But the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board said Monday July 9 that it has come to an agreement with the U of I to keep that facility’s doors open.

Executive Director Kevin McClain said U of I President Robert Easter initiated talks with members of the board to explain the role of its Police Training Institute, repairing a relationship he described as "dormant."

Western Illinois University is facing another year of reduced state funding while also playing a waiting game with the state.

WIU President Jack Thomas has asked each vice president at the school to reduce his or her division's total budget by 2%. Thomas said the state reduced it support of Western for the new fiscal year by $3.4 million, a cut of more than 6%.

He said WIU recently received a $6.3 million payment from the state but is still owed around $13 million for the Fiscal Year 2012, which ended June 30.

Western Illinois University's Agronomy Day will feature two topics that can make or break a farming operation-weather and weeds.

Dr. Mark Bertrands is one of the speakers. He says winter annual weeds got a head start due to early warm weather this year

He also says, “The other challenge that I've seen is that we had several periods where it was quite dry and many times we put down pre-emergence herbicides that keep the weeds from coming up. Many of those failed. Put some pressure on the herbicides we applied later on to take care of what was missed the first time.”

Rich Egger's guest is Western Illinois Museum Curator Sue Scott. They talk about the museum's new exhibit Legacy of Learning: A History of Our Schools.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the museum. Scott promises there will not be a test! The exhibit remains on display until September 22, 2012.

The exhibit follows a timeline. Scott said that will help visitors follow some of the nuances of information such as changes in ordinances and laws and the types of schools.
