New Proposal for Illinois Pension System

The Illinois income tax increase would be made permanent in the latest proposal to fix the state's underfunded pension systems.

The income tax plan approved by lawmakers temporarily increased the rate from 3% to 5%.  It’s scheduled to begin decreasing in 2014.

But Representative Lou Lang (D-Skokie) said the state can't afford that. Lang said Illinois taxpayers didn't create the pension problem, but it's a problem they're stuck with.

“"We have a responsibility to fix it. And we have a responsibility to have shared sacrifice,” Land said.

AFSCME Continues to Consider Strike

Illinois’ largest public employees' union is talking more about a strike.  Henry Bayer, Executive Director of AFSCME, said contract talks with the governor's office are going nowhere. 

Bayer told Illinois Public Radio that a strike is a real possibility, and he said Governor Quinn is the catalyst.  Bayer said Quinn's termination of the union's previous contract and his attempts to force cuts in pay and benefits has workers ready to go on the picket line.

West Central School District 235 Closed

West Central School District 235 is closed today, February 19th, due to an electrical problem.  The school had issued a two hour delay but has decided to close for the entire day.
