Ameren Selects Route for New Transmission Lines

The Illinois Commerce Commission will soon be asked to approve the route for new transmission lines that will stretch from the Mississippi River to the Indiana border.

Ameren Transmission Company is calling it the Illinois Rivers Project. It will run near communities such as Quincy, Pawnee, and Mt Zion plus there will be a branch extending north from Meredosia to Ipava.

Ameren wants to build a transmission line from eastern Missouri to western Indiana. It would run right through Illinois -- including portions of this region -- and is called the Illinois Rivers Project.

Expert says Renewable Energy Future is Possible

Dr. Peter Schwartzman shared his optimistic view of a future without fossil fueled energy as the keynote speaker at Western Illinois University's 9th annual Environmental Summit.

He said local activism is contributing to the popularity of renewable energy alternatives.

He said, “There are opportunities all around us. We have roofs that don't have solar panels. We have fields of growing food that could easily take on a wind turbine with marginal loss of production.”
