USDA Creates New Microloan Program

The USDA has launched a new microloan program that it says is designed to help small and family operations along with beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers.

According to a  local farm loan specialist  it may especially help a specific kind of small farmer, and give a boost to the local food movement.

Illinois Promoting Local Foods

"Buy Illinois!" That's the message the state's Department of Agriculture has for consumers.

The state is promoting the idea by encouraging grocery stores and farmers' markets to take part in its new "Where Fresh Is" campaign.

Jennifer Tirey of the Agriculture Department said Illinois shoppers are more inclined to buy food if they know it's grown on Illinois farms.

Macomb Community Garden Taking Root

The Macomb Community Garden is looking forward to growing this year -- growing crops and growing membership.

An informational meeting will be held Wednesday, March 7 at 7:00 pm in the Community Room at Macomb City Hall.

Chairman John Miller said the garden provides an opportunity for those who want to garden but cannot do so at home because of poor soil, too much shade, or some other issue.
