Iowa Fertilizer Company (IFC) will build a $1.4-billion nitrogen fertilizer production plant on 500-acres of land near Wever in northern Lee County.

The site offers rail, river and highway access and is located near a natural gas line, which is essential to the plant's operation.

The project will create 165 full-time, permanent jobs and several thousand temporary construction jobs.

During a news conference in Des Moines on Wednesday, Governor Terry Branstad says this will be a much-needed shot in the arm for Iowa, and Lee County in particular.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is confident his state will come out on top when it comes to a proposed $1.5-billion fertilizer plant.

Orascom Construction Industries is said to be considering multiple sites in Iowa for the plant, along with locations in central Illinois and Texas.

Branstad says he has personally talked to representatives of the Egypt-based company about Iowa’s history of honest, reliable government, especially when compared to Illinois.

Lee County Facing Competition for Jobs

Lee County, IA has some competition in its efforts to land a new industry.

The county has spent months trying to encourage Iowa Fertilizer Company to build a plant on several hundred acres of land just north of Fort Madison.

The company is a subsidiary of Orascom Construction Industries, which is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.

The $1.3-billion plant could create up to 200 permanent jobs and several thousand short-term construction jobs.
