Aldermen will be asked during their September 17 meeting to approve a plan for placing a new statue in the southwest part of Chandler Park.
“This memorial will celebrate women,” said Tina Belz of the Macomb Women's Club. “It will be a source of ongoing understanding of the value of women's contributions to our community.”
The agreement between the club and the city also establishes the dimensions of the statue and its surrounding plaza.
The Macomb Beautiful Association will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a public reception on Wednesday, September 12, 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm at the West Central Illinois Arts Center, 25 East Side Square.
MBA President Rosemary Aten said the group maintains the memorial gardens in Chandler Park. It also maintains a memorial garden and the flower boxes at the Macomb Travel Center, and it provides the Christmas trees and lights for Chandler Park and the depot.
It took some sorting out, but Macomb aldermen eventually agreed to have more lights installed at Chandler Park before next month's Heritage Days celebration.
Eleven electrical bollards will be added to the north side of the park. Bollards were installed in the southern portion of the park last year.
In addition, floodlights will be installed at the Chandler monument and the Civil War monument.
