LEE COUNTY

An engineering study for a proposed sewer system in rural Lee County could be completed before the end of the year.

The study will provide construction options and potential costs for people living in and around Mooar/Powdertown.

The results of the study will determine whether the sewer project moves forward.

The Lee County Board of Supervisors plans to review it before meeting with residents.

Superintendent to Meet With HS Administration

The Burlington School District is looking into a note left on multiple cars following the recent high school graduation ceremony.

It’s been reported that the note mentioned bullying, intimidation and miscommunication by teachers towards students at the high school.

The signature was from the “Graduating Class of 2012.”

Superintendent Jane Evans says similar concerns were recently raised by a student during a meeting of the School Improvement Advisory Committee.

She plans to meet with the high school administrative team about both incidents.

Burlington Schools Expanding Bullying Definition

The Burlington School District is updating its policy on bullying and harassment.  The changes are based on a recent site visit by the Iowa Department of Education.

Human Resources Director Laurie Hempen says the agency wants Burlington to expand the list of situations that could be considered bullying or harassment.  She says the additions include gender identity, political party, physical attributes, and ancestry.

Hempen says the policy already covered situations including race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation.
