Shop Talk - October 18

Macomb, IL – The panelists discuss media coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

They feel the mainstream media was slow to react to the protests, and panelist Mike Murray believes many news organizations continue to give short shrift to the movement. He compares the coverage to the way the media portrayed Vietnam War protesters during the late 1960s and early '70s.

Panelist Bill Knight is not surprised by the dismissive tone of the coverage done by Fox or the glorification of the protests done by some people on the left, such as Amy Goodman. He has found much of the coverage provided by the mainstream media to be superficial.

The panelists are also puzzled by the differences between coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement and coverage of the Tea Party movement. Reporters were quick to cover Tea Party protests as part of a single movement even though - like Occupy Wall Street - there were many different factions with grievances about a wide variety of issues.
