SCC Vice President Resigning
Southeastern Community College will soon have to fill another vacancy in a key position.
Dr. Phil Thomas has informed the college that he is resigning effective August 15. He has served as Vice President for Teaching and Learning for the last two years.
Thomas has not identified his new employer as its Board has not yet voted on his appointment. He expects a public announcement to be made after May 25.
Thomas sent an email to faculty and staff on Wednesday that said he would stay with SCC through a visit by the Higher Learning Commission August 13-14.
“Starting the week of July 9, I will use accrued vacation time to split time between the two colleges,” says Thomas. “My new employer had hoped that I would start July 1; however, they have graciously agreed to allow me to assist in any way that I can to make the HLC visit a successful one.”
Thomas’ announcement comes roughly one month after Beverly Simone announced her upcoming retirement as President. While an official date for her departure has yet to be established, Simone hopes SCC’s new president is in place by the start of the fall semester.
She says the college has two options: appoint an interim vice president or wait until her replacement is named to interview vice presidential candidates. The college’s president makes a recommendation on who should be hired as vice president.
Simone says she has been genuinely happy with Thomas’ work during his two years with SCC, adding that she values his talents and skills.
