Public Meeting on September 11

Project Dog Park in Galesburg
There is no dog park in Galesburg -- but a group of volunteers hopes to change that.
Project Dog Park's Obi Oki said dogs love to run but there is no place for unleashed pets to do so right now.
“I just think it would be wonderful if they could get out and run and do what they do naturally in a protected area,” Oki said.
Project Dog Park and the city will hold a public meeting on September 11. It begins at 4:30 pm in the Sandburg Mall Community Room. The purpose is to gather input on the location, rules, configuration, and other aspects of the proposed dog park.
Oki would like to build a fenced-in dog park on at least three acres. It would be split into two sections -- one for larger dogs, one for smaller. She would also prefer a site with a bit of shade, some terrain, and places for dog owners to sit.
Oki said the group will begin fundraising once it has the go-ahead from the city.
“The city is not funding it. They are providing the land but the funds will all be private donations,” Oki said.
She is asking those who attend the September 11 meeting to bring jars with them that can be used as donation jars.
It's Oki's hope to break ground in the spring if enough money can be raised by then. She said it should not take long to build the dog park once construction begins.
