Landfill Work Surpasses Budget
Carthage, IL – Carthage aldermen have learned that closure work on their landfill will cost about $50,000 more than expected. Mayor James Nightingale says a series of unexpected expenses is responsible for the extra cost. Items include having to run electrical power to the site and about $30,000 extra in engineering inspection costs. Nightingale says aldermen are not happy with the over-run but believe the project must be finished. The needed money might come from the capital spending budget. The city is installing a system to collect leachate from the landfill and truck it to the city's sewer plant for treatment. Nightingale says the project is almost complete.
