West Burlington, IA – Jason Parrott's guest is Beverly Simone, who is president of Southeastern Community College.

Dr. Simone says she is excited about the start of the new school year for SCC.

She points to the addition of a new program: Animation Technology.

She says the program had to be expanded from 20 to 28 positions due to initial interest.

Simone believes this will attract students from across Iowa and around the country.

She says, on the flip side, SCC had to eliminate the precision machining program due to only two students being registered last year.

Simone says SCC has reached out to local industries to see if there is a way to make up for the loss of the program.

She says 2011-2012 will be another tight year for SCC, from a financial sense.

Simone says that is without considering how potential changes to Iowa's K-12 system will impact community colleges across the state.

She says enrollment is down, in terms of credit hours and total students. SCC is working on ways to reverse that, including offering more remedial courses to help students catch up or a 1st year program to help students get acclimated to college.
