Residents Make Request

Denmark School Demo Likely
Some residents of an unincorporated Lee County community want a former school to be demolished.
The request came during a recent Fort Madison School Board meeting in regards to Denmark Elementary, which has sat vacant for months.
Superintendent Ken Marang says demolition has always been an option, especially now that asbestos in the building has been addressed.
“(The residents) would like for the district to give that (land) to the community so they could do some things with it,” says Marang. “There are some things they want out of it when we deconstruct it, some things they would like to keep for historic value.”
Marang says he will seek demolition bids.
He does not know when a final decision could be made on the demolition or on the future of the historic items.
The district is in the process of selling the former Fort Madison Middle School to a local developer.
