Dealing With Difference Institute
Rich Egger's guests are Jan Welsch and J. Q. Adams, who are organizers of the annual Dealing With Difference Institute at Western Illinois University.
The two-day conference begins at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 15 with a presentation by Dr Pedro Noguera, who is one of two keynote speakers at this year's DWDI.
Noguera is the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education and a faculty member in New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development as well as the Department of Sociology.
"Pedro Noguera is one of the best and brightest folks in our country -- if not on the planet -- for looking at these kinds of complex issues," Adams said. "He is especially knowledgeable about the plights of young African-American and Latino males in our society, especially within our education system."
The other keynote speaker is Civil Rights legend and Macomb native Reverend C. T. Vivian. His presentation will begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 16.
"I think whoever hears him will fall under his spell. He is such a gentle man who has absorbed the philosophy of non-violence and cooperation and commitment. (He has) passion for social justice and the things he believes in," said Welsch. "He has a lifetime of involvement."
All of the presentations and seminars take place at the WIU Multi-Cultural Center. The events are open to the public; registration is requested.
