Boy Killed in Dog Attack

Galesburg police say they are still investigating a dog attack that killed a seven-year old boy.

Ryan Maxwell of Galesburg was pronounced dead at Cottage Hospital Saturday afternoon, less than an hour after he was attacked.

Police said Maxwell was playing with other children in the yard at 675 Whiting Avenue when the pit bull attacked. Police said when they arrived, the dog was biting the child. Police said after they managed to pull the child away, the dog turned on them so they shot it to prevent further attacks.

Police have not identified the owners, though they said the attack happened at the home where the dog had been kept.

No charges have been filed while Galesburg police and Illinois State Police continue their investigation.
