Big HUD Grant for Carthage

Carthage, IL – A vacant lot in Carthage will soon be used to fill an important need in the community. A 10-unit apartment complex for low-income seniors will be built at the corner of Walnut and Marion. It'll be the first senior housing complex in the town. Mayor Jim Nightingale says the location is ideal because it's near the downtown shopping district, the senior center, and other amenities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will provide $1,141,900 to cover the entire construction cost. West Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging Assistant Director Todd Shackelford is thrilled with the announcement. He says the application process was very competitive. Construction of the single-bedroom units could begin in the fall and the first seniors could move in as soon as spring of next year.
