Burlington School Low Performing

Burlington, IA – The Iowa Department of Education says Oak Street Middle School is one of the lowest performing schools in the state. Assistant Superintendent Jane Evans says the school's inclusion was based on low test scores over the last three years.

Evans says this is the first year the state has created this type of list. She says the state took the number of students who were proficient in math and reading and divided that number by the total students taking the state test.

The Cartographer's Dilemma

Macomb, IL – A new art exhibit uses multi-media to explore the relationship between duplication and culture.

The exhibit at the Western Illinois University Art Gallery is called "The Cartographer's Dilemma." It features work by a half-dozen artists: Paul Guzzardo, Jesse Codling, David Walczyk, Alan Brunettin, Emily Grothus, and Jordan Morrell.

Dopper Radar Online, But Not Used

Macomb, IL – $42,000 recently replaced McDonough County's Doppler radar system atop Memorial Hall on the Western Illinois University Campus. The cost was split between the county, city and university. It's been operational for roughly a month and a half.

But since the new system was put in place, it hasn't been used. The old system was only used once last year. County Board Emergency Services Disaster Agency (ESDA) Committee chairman Tony Coniglio says it's only turned on when there's a "significant weather situation" approaching the region.

Emphasis - January 22

Western Illinois – This week's program previews upcoming events at a couple arts centers in western Illinois.

Rich Egger's first guest is Nancy Crossman. She serves on the board of the West Central Illinois Arts Center in Macomb (Egger also serves on the WCIAC board). The organization's current exhibit is "Quilt Expressions - Art and Story in Fabric." That will be followed by a student art show.

The WCIAC will also be presenting plays and a concert in the coming months.
