The Burlington School District no longer needs the former Washington Elementary School, prompting the school board to vote to demolish the building.

Teens Arrested for Burlington Arson

The Burlington Police Department arrested Austin Williams, 13, of Burlington and Daniel Lynn, 13, also of Burlington, in connection with a "suspicious" fire at Corse Elementary School.

The juveniles are charged with 2nd Degree Arson, which is a Class C Felony that carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.

The Burlington Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm at the school at 9:07 P.M. on Sunday, August 5. They discovered a fire on the roof and smoke in the hallways.

The estimated damage to the school is less than $10,000.

The field of education continues to evolve and progress, starting with classroom materials.

There was a time when students took notes with pencils and paper while a teacher stood up and wrote on a chalkboard.

Today, there are schools where kids are using laptops or iPads to search the internet while teachers use interactive smart-boards.

School districts are trying to keep up with the evolution of education by building new state-of-the-art facilities that take advantage of the latest technology and other advancements.

Superintendent to Meet With HS Administration

The Burlington School District is looking into a note left on multiple cars following the recent high school graduation ceremony.

It’s been reported that the note mentioned bullying, intimidation and miscommunication by teachers towards students at the high school.

The signature was from the “Graduating Class of 2012.”

Superintendent Jane Evans says similar concerns were recently raised by a student during a meeting of the School Improvement Advisory Committee.

She plans to meet with the high school administrative team about both incidents.

Burlington Schools Expanding Bullying Definition

The Burlington School District is updating its policy on bullying and harassment. The changes are based on a recent site visit by the Iowa Department of Education.

Human Resources Director Laurie Hempen says the agency wants Burlington to expand the list of situations that could be considered bullying or harassment. She says the additions include gender identity, political party, physical attributes, and ancestry.

Hempen says the policy already covered situations including race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation.

Burlington Schools Form Boundaries Committee

The Burlington School District is going back to the drawing board when it comes to reshaping school boundaries.

Superintendent Jane Evans says the district’s elementary enrollment is out of balance. She says, for example, North Hill has too many students while Blackhawk is running well below capacity.

The district estimates that 14% of its elementary school students do not attend their neighborhood school. In response, it identified a neighborhood where students could change schools to help balance out the enrollment figures.

Burlington Technology Plan Approved

Keeping up with new technology could require the Burlington School District to do more than just purchase equipment.

The school board unanimously approved the district’s latest technology plan.

The 12-page document focuses on hardware, content, access, professional development and support.

Superintendent Jane Evans says the district has consistently worked to add and/or upgrade its technology at each building.

Burlington Identifies New Home For School

The Burlington School District believes it has a permanent home for one of its programs. The district’s alternative high school serves about 100 non-traditional students.

These are students who are not able to attend regular classes for a variety of reasons (arrest, behavior, having a baby, etc.)

Superintendent Jane Evans says they are required to complete a similar course-load as students at Burlington High School.
