Macomb to Seek Special Census

In what’s become a once-a-decade tradition, Macomb will ask the US Census Bureau to conduct a special census.

The 2010 census came up with a headcount of 19,288. But the city believes its population is closer to 20,000.

The city also had a special census done after the 1990 and 2000 headcounts came up with totals below 20,000. In both cases, the special census returned the city’s population to 20,000.

Street Repairs Part of Macomb's Next Budget

Macomb City Administrator Dean Torreson this week gave aldermen an overview of the city's proposed new budget, which will go into effect May 1.

He said the budget includes money for fixing several streets. The money comes from a one-cent sales tax. Voters agreed in February 2011 to increase that tax from half-a-cent to a full cent.

"Our sales tax revenue has been coming it at the projected rate," Torreson said. "It did double so we're right on target there."
