The generous listeners of Tri States Public Radio pledged more than $56,000 during our Fall 2012 Membership Drive! Thank you to the hundreds of people who did their part to support high quality news and information programming as well as classical, jazz and folk music for southeast Iowa, west central Illinois and northeast Missouri. While the number is impressive, it is a little short of our goal of $66,500, but there is still time to pledge here.

During the month, Colchester received some good news from the USDA, Lee County made plans to add beds to its jail, and a historic structure in Macomb received a national designation.

Time ran out on plans to build Shamrock Acres, a large scale hog farm proposed for southeast McDonough County. Tri States Public Radio reported the story on June 13, one week before anyone else.

Also during the month, the US Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act, the chairperson of the Lee County Board was defeated in the June 5 primary, and the Transit of Venus happened for the final time until 2117.

During the month, former Macomb High School teacher and coach Daniel Watson and former Hamilton School Board member Dion Gregory both learned their sentences for inappropriate conduct with minors. A Burlington man was sentenced for starting a fire at a church in that town. Four young people from Burlington were killed when two boats collided on the Mississippi River.

The proposed consolidation of the Abingdon, Avon, and Bushnell-Prairie City School Districts was soundly rejected during the March 20 Illinois primaries. More than 80% of B-PC voters cast ballots against the idea and it was rejected by more than 74% in Abingdon. Only voters in Avon approved it. The week after the election, reporter Jim Lenz took a look at what might be next for those school districts.
