Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-IA) is helping in the effort to secure a key designation for Keokuk Area Hospital.

He sent a two-page letter, earlier this week, to the Acting Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

In it, the Congressman wrote of his support for the hospital’s appeal of the agency’s denial of Critical Access status for the facility.

CEO Wally Winkler says receiving that designation would help the hospital through some very difficult financial times.

Apprehension About KAH Donation

There is some apprehension among members of the Keokuk City Council when it comes to supporting the local hospital.

Keokuk Area Hospital continues to face an uncertain future due to its financial instability.

The hospital says it is reimbursed about 75% of the money spent on care and services. That is due to a number of factors, including a large number of low income clients and the formula for state and/or federal reimbursements.

Lee County Supports KAH

Lee County is showing support for Keokuk Area Hospital as the Board of Supervisors has pledged $100,000 to the financially-strapped hospital.

There is one condition with the contribution. It must be matched or even exceeded by the Keokuk City Council.

Keokuk Area Hospital CEO Wally Winkler says the city and county are being asked for support the hospital in the hopes of receiving additional state funding. He says there is money available to help hospitals, like Keokuk, that receive inadequate reimbursements for services.

Keokuk Hospital Seeking State Help

Keokuk’s mayor is optimistic the state will come through with funding for its hospital.

A delegation of city and county leaders joined representatives of Keokuk Area Hospital in a trip to Des Moines to meet with two key lawmakers in the field of health care.

State Representative Dave Heaton (R-Mt. Pleasant) chairs the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee in the House while State Senator Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines) leads the same committee in the Senate.

Mayor Tom Marion says the goal of the meeting was to share information.
