New Superintendent Takes the Helm

Ed Fletcher has taken the helm of the Monmouth-Roseville School District. He spent the last six years as principal at the high school in Staunton, Illinois.

This is the first time he has been the top administrator for an entire district.

He has spent a lot of time during his first three weeks on the job learning the names of faculty and staff.

Fletcher says it's important to him not only to get to know them but also to know their expectations for the district. He says the employees have a great passion for education.

Willets Building to House ROE

The Monmouth-Roseville School District closed Willets Elementary School last year. It will soon re-open as home to the Regional Office of Education for Warren, Mercer and Henderson counties.

School Board President Lynn Shimun says the contract was signed last week.

He says, “This is something we've been working on for about two years and finally we've got it completed. And we're working on getting a few minor adjustments and things made to the rooms."

The ROE will also move an alternative school into the building.

Intervention Program Shows Results

The Monmouth-Roseville School Board believes the district's Response to Intervention program deserves more time to prove its worth.

Superintendent Paul Woehlke says, despite budget concerns, it's a good move to retain the seven aides in the program.

The goal of RTI is keep students who are failing academically in regular classrooms.

Superintendent Says Districts Could Share Services

The Monmouth-Roseville school superintendent hopes the Classroom First Commission will take a look at simple ways to save education dollars.

Paul Woehlke said small steps can mean big savings.

He said, “There is opportunity for sharing what we call 'back office' functions. Payroll and bookkeeping and those kinds of things. In my mind, I'm not sure that opportunity has been explored to its fullest extent yet.”

He said districts use a wide variety of software packages so compatibility is the only real barrier.

District Will Remodel Website

Monmouth-Roseville School Superintendent Paul Woehlke said many people form their first impression of the district from its website. He said it serves as the online ”front porch” for the district. It needs a facelift.

He said, “We just have not kept up with the times in terms of having a website that's modern and user-friendly and informative and up-to-date.”

School Day Will Start Later Once a Week

School bells will ring an hour later on Wednesdays next year in the Monmouth-Roseville School District.

Students might see it as recreational time. Superintendent Paul Woehlke said teachers will be hard at work. They will spend the extra time collaborating to make sure they are all on the same page when it comes to common core standards. The state has adopted the standards with testing of students to begin in 2014.

District Will Switch to Sales Tax Revenue for New Building

The Monmouth-Roseville School District originally planned to rely on a fund-raising campaign to come up with the money for a new building. It will house a weight room and agriculture classes.

Superintendent Paul Woehlke said the estimated cost of the building is $500,000. He said the district will rely on a mix of donations and sales tax revenue to pay for it.

Woehlke said the Sports Boosters and FFA Alumni raised about $60,000. Another $10,000 came from other donations. That money was spent on construction materials.

School District Works to Improve Literacy of Latino Students

The Monmouth-Roseville School District is committing to improving the literacy of Spanish-speaking students over the next few years.

The district will add a second bi-lingual kindergarten class next fall.

Superintendent Paul Woehlke said the goal is to help Latino students with both their Spanish and English language skills.
